Chicago: Airport Dismissals Renew Calls For Living Wage Ordinance

The dismissal of 12 airport bookstore employees at O'Hare Airport has renewed the push for a "Stable Jobs, Stable Airports" living wage ordinance. Unite Here, which represents the fired workers at Hudson News bookstore along with 1,300 additional airport employees, claimed that the fired workers were some of the airport's highest paid.

Ald. Jason Ervin (28th) sponsored an ordinance for airport workers that would effectively raise worker's annual income by about $4,000. A University of Chicago and Roosevelt University report found that the ordinance would have a positive economic impact, partly thanks to reduced employee turnover among airport concession workers. Ervin's legislation enjoys 31 co-sponsors, but the city council has not considered it this year.
