Momentum is picking up around the City Council Fair Wages for New Yorkers Act, “Requiring the payment of a living wage [$10/hr currently] to employees employed on property developed by recipients of financial assistance for economic and community development.” A portion of affected jobs would be in food service or food retail.

“ ‘Covered employer.’ Defines the types of employers on subsidized development projects that must pay the living wage. The chief categories are: (a) employers that directly receive financial assistance; (b) tenants operating on property developed with financial assistance [Metrotech, Atlantic Center, Atlantic Yards, etc.] ; and (d) on-site service contractors such as staffing agencies or food service contractors operating on property developed with financial assistance.”

Community support for the bill is being organized by Living Wage NYC. The grassroots movement around this effort is growing. A spirited ML King Day rally at a Manhattan church drew upwards of 2000 community, labor and clergy activists.
