The Government's under fire over the news inflation has soared to a record two-decade high of 5.3 percent.

The Service and Food Workers Union says rising inflation is making it difficult for minimum-wage earners to get by, and calling for the minimum wage to be raised to $15 per hour.

The Consumer Price Index has been boosted by the rise in the cost of food and petrol and the GST rate hike last year.

Labour Party leader Phil Goff says the rate of inflation is frightening, and emphasises the need to remove GST from fresh fruit and vegetables, a provision included in his party’s tax policy.

The Service and Food Workers Union says it's distressing news for members on a minimum wage - who are becoming increasingly desperate.

National Secretary John Ryall believes it's an important topic to address this election year.

Mr Ryall says those on the minimum wage are often having to pick up second and third jobs to keep up with the cost of living.
