Experts to Tell All as Shopping Season Heats Up

What: With the busiest shopping season of the year fast approaching, the good, the bad, and the ugly sides of working retail will be revealed by a panel of experts. Retail is among the few growing industries in New York City. Yet, the quality of retail jobs is declining, with fewer employers creating living wage jobs. Can we afford bargain basement jobs in this important industry? What role can shoppers play in re-valuing the work of people employed on the front lines of our retail economy? An exciting panel of experts will address these questions and more.

Who: City Council Member Daniel R. Garodnick (District 4); Caitlin Kelly, author of "Malled: My Unintentional Career in Retail;" Ron Chencinski, Vice President, Local 1-S Macy’s, RWDSU/UFCW; Tami Tyree, a life-long retail professional and leader at the Retail Action Project; and Carrie Gleason, Director of the Retail Action Project. With moderator Dorian T. Warren, Columbia University Political Science; Fellow, Roosevelt Institute
