MEDIA ADVISORY: 60 Congregations Unite for Living Wages!

What: Living Wage Weekend. More than 60 houses of worship throughout New York City will preach on economic justice and the need for the City Council to pass the Fair Wages for New Yorkers Act. The Act would require living wages be paid in all publicly subsidized developments in New York City. City Council Members will be invited to the services. Congregants will be signing thousands of postcards to their Council Members. A majority of City Council members have already signed on in support of the bill. Living Wage Weekend is happening in conjunction with Micah Challenge 10.10.10 where millions of people around the world will participate in worship services in support of the United Nation's Millennium Development Goals to end poverty.

Who: Among the many faith-based institutions participating in the Living Wage Weekend are: The Micah Institute at New York Theological Seminary. African American Clergy and Elected Officials, Clergy United for Community Empowerment, Queens Federation of Churches, Baptist Ministers' Conference for Greater New York and Vicinity and The Greater NY Labor Religion Coalition.

When: Most services will take place Sunday, October 10,2010.

Where: Houses of worship throughout New York City. (Call for the place of worship most convenient for coverage.)

Specific Houses of Worship include: Manhattan: Convent Avenue Baptist Church, The Riverside Church, Judson Memorial Church, Mosque of Islamic Brotherhood, St. Columba Church, The Village Church, Park Ave. United Methodist Church, Brooklyn: New Life Tabernacle, Citadel of Praise and Worship, Nazarene Congregational, Antioch Baptist Church, Bronx: St. Nicholas of Tolentine, Latino Pastoral Action Center, Queens: Lemuel Haynes Congregational Church.
